Universal human interests: human relationships, sex, death, destruction, money, and themselves?

I am sure all agree that individuals have different interests, but you will also agree that there are certain UNIVERSAL interests that all people share? My professor suggested that they were: human relationships, sex, death, destruction, money, and themselves. A little dark, but seems to make sense. What do you think?

I think there is balance in the universe. Meaning .. Yes all the things you have mentioned are true (very true), but we also joy we have fun we have seasons in the sun. I think the things you've entered is inately what people must do to attain the good things ..

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. Absolute Destruction Absolute Destruction
$29.48

In a book that is at once a major contribution to modern European history and a cautionary tale for today, Isabel V. Hull argues that the routines and practices of the Imperial German Army, unchecked by effective civilian institutions, increasingly sought the absolute destruction of its enemies as the only guarantee of the nation's security. So deeply embedded were the assumptions and procedures of this distinctively German military culture that the Army, in its drive to annihilate the enemy military, did not shrink from the utter destruction of civilian property and lives. Carried to its extreme, the logic of "military necessity" found real security only in extremities of destruction, in the "silence of the graveyard." Hull begins with a dramatic account, based on fresh archival work, of the German Army's slide from administrative murder to genocide in German Southwest Africa (1904-7). The author then moves back to 1870 and the war that inaugurated the Imperial era in German history, and analyzes the genesis and nature of this specifically German military culture and its operations in colonial warfare. In the First World War the routines perfected in the colonies were visited upon European populations. Hull focuses on one set of cases (Belgium and northern France) in which the transition to total destruction was checked (if barely) and on another (Armenia) in which "military necessity" caused Germany to accept its ally's genocidal policies even after these became militarily counterproductive. She then turns to the Endkampf (1918), the German General Staff's plan to achieve victory in the Great War even if the homeland were destroyed in the process—a seemingly insane campaign that completes! the logic of this deeply institutionalized set of military routines and practices. Hull concludes by speculating on the role of this distinctive military culture in National Socialism's military and racial policies. Absolute Destruction has serious implications for the nature of warmaking in any modern power. At its heart is a warning about the blindness of bureaucratic routines, especially when those bureaucracies command the instruments of mass death.

$27.48

"contrarian""professional outsider""a sore loser""another member of the Flat Earth Society""a national treasure""a modern Don Quixote""a skeptic's joy!"No matter what he's called, Gerald Bracey IS public schools' best defender. And in this book, he uses his considerable writing and research skills on their behalf. With authority, sensitivity, and a good sense of humor, he dismantles the negative PR our public education system has endured and does it with hardcore data, not phony "science." Bracey delivers the statistics and skillful analysis needed to win the numbers game that plays out daily in the popular press. Drawing on data from a variety of reputable sources, he proves that public schools are doing much better than critics claim, some indicators even showing record highs. He takes on the testing movement in numerous chapters, offers data that provide different perspectives than usually seen, and reviews the history of public schools, showing how they have included more and more students while raising achievement levels, too. He questions the so-called "failing schools," discusses the phenomenon of "summer loss," provides international comparisons, and presents data to argue that investing in universal quality preschool pays off in the long run. He even attempts to enter the mind of the father of American public education, Horace Mann, to see what he might think about the "nuttiness of today's policies." Bracey believes that our only hope to save the public school system is for teachers, teacher educators, and administrators to help speed up the needed perspective transformation. And they can begin to do it by reading this book and resuming their rightful position in educating students.

This book is about my life and the several horrible paths that I had to undergo. The book guides readers through my spiritual transformation through all my trials and tribulations in which God was watching over me. I hope to inspire several believers and non-believers to look at my story and what God has done for me in order to better their lives and faith. Minister Claudette Barrett was called to the Ministry in 1980 while listening to the Chuck Swindol radio program. She joined the Church of God Fellowship Ministry, where she taught Sunday school and worked with Fellowship visiting nursing homes, hospitals, and detox centers. After leaving Church of God Fellowship, she became a member of the New Testament Church of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Minister Claudette decided she wanted more teaching, so she joined New Covenants Christian Center. She then became active in Evangelistic Ministry, Cell Ministry, Missionary Ministry, and book store Ministry. Minister Claudette was ordained by Bishop Glen Prospere, Pastor of the Full Life Gospel Center. There she served as a Youth Minister, Minister of Evangelism and a children Church Minister. Minister Claudette attended Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Graduated From the Bethel Bible Institute where she studied for four years.

The Summer Of Self-Destruction The Summer Of Self-Destruction

The Summer of Self-Destruction is a wide-ranging and accessible collection of poetry. Salvation Like Destruction Salvation Like Destruction
$8.98

The term "blackened death metal" has been applied to numerous bands, but one term that hasn't been used nearly as much (at least as of early 2009) is "blackened thrash metal." However, that term has been used to describe Assaulter's debut album, Salvation Like Destruction, and it is an accurate description of what the Australian trio does on this 2008 recording. Salvation Like Destruction is, in fact, a thrash metal disc with a strong black metal influence -- certainly when it comes to the lead vocals of S. Berserker, whose rasp gives this 39-minute CD its black metal appeal. However, other things closely identified with black metal (such as blastbeats and ultra-ominous harmonies) are not part of the picture on Salvation Like Destruction; replace Berserker's rasp vocals with clean vocals, and this would have been a straight-ahead, '80s-style thrash album rather than a "blackened" thrash album. And even with Berserker's black metal-minded vocals, forceful tracks like "Awe of Fire," "The Axiom Star," and "Vengeance Whips" are still very '80s-sounding -- which makes sense when one considers that black metal, like death metal, came out of thrash and owes a strong artistic debt to punk. Assaulter's approach is basically thrash metal with an awareness of early black metal, and it's important to remember that the early black metal bands identified with punk's garage-like rawness and lack of slickness (although the symphonic black metal bands that came along later brought more polish to the table). Salvation Like Destruction is mildly inconsistent, but overall, it is a likable reminder of the common ground shared by thrash metal and black metal. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
Death of British Agriculture: The Wanton Destruction of a Key Industry Death of British Agriculture: The Wanton Destruction of a Key Industry
$75.03

British agriculture has been brought to its knees by the onslaught of successive crisesEven before the foot and mouth epidemic British agriculture was already in its death throes. Struggling under the onslaught of successive crises - the effects of the Common Agricultural Policy and the bureaucratic demands of the EU; food scares from salmonella to BSE; the spread of intensive farming and the concentration of buying power in the hands of the retail giants - British farming has been brought to its knees. Who is to blame? The government, the farmers themselves, supermarkets, the CAP, the EU? In this very timely book Dr Richard North investigates the many causes of farming's imminent demise. His list of suspects is long, and his analysis pinpoints the guilty parties. There may just be a breath of life left in the corpse of British farming, but only if clear and successful policies covering land management, subsidies, government controls and how to deal with scares are formulated.
The Destruction of the European Jews The Destruction of the European Jews
$9.98

The Destruction of the European Jews is widely considered the landmark study of the Holocaust. First published in 1961, Raul Hilberg's comprehensive account of how Germany annihilated the Jewish community of Europe spurred discussion, galvanized further research, and shaped the entire field of Holocaust studies. This revised and expanded edition of Hilberg's classic work extends the scope of his study and includes 80,000 words of new material, particularly from recently opened archives in eastern Europe, added over a lifetime of research. It is the definitive work of a scholar who has devoted more than fifty years to exploring and analyzing the realities of the Holocaust. Spanning the twelve-year period of anti-Jewish actions from 1933 to 1945, Hilberg's study encompasses Germany and all the territories under German rule or influence. Its principal focus is on the large number of perpetrators -- civil servants, military personnel, Nazi party functionaries, SS men, and representatives of private enterprises -- in the machinery of death.

Pulver (guitar, background vocals); Andy Brooks, Franky Winkelmann (background vocals).Audio Mixer: Peter T¿gtgren.Recording information: Atilla, Salisbury, England; House Of Music Studios, Gemany; Little Creek Studios, Switzerland.Photographer: Dirk Schelpmeier. Some bands go through numerous lineup changes yet somehow manage to be consistent, but all too often, bands that are revolving doors are anything but consistent; you never know if they are going to come out with a great album, a mediocre album, or a weak album. That has certainly been the case with Destruction; the German outfit has had more than its share of lineup changes over the years -- and their albums have ranged from excellent to totally forgettable. Released in 2005 -- 23 years after the band`s formation -- Inventor of Evil won`t go down in history as one of Destruction`s essential discs but is still a good, solid addition to their catalog. The material on this 50-minute CD is pure, unadulterated, `80s-style thrash metal -- fast, intense, heavy, and forceful, but not as harsh or unforgiving as a lot of the merciless death metal, grindcore, and metalcore that came out in the `90s and 2000s. Inventor of Evil recalls the sort of albums that, back in the mid-`80s, showed headbangers what could happen when a healthy appreciation of power metal was combined with a healthy appreciation of punk`s velocity -- the type of high-velocity aggression that enabled headbangers to form mosh pits and demonstrate that slam dancing wasn`t strictly for punk shows. And that punk element is why a thrash disc like Inventor of Evil -- although certainly not innovative or groundbreaking -- doesn`t sound quite as dated (by mid-2000s standards) as, say, a power metal revival disc (the type of disc that doesn`t have the punk element and tries to sound exactly like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden circa 1979). Inventor of Evil isn`t recommended to those who have only a casual interest in Destruction`s work, but longtime followers will find it to be an enjoyable demonstration of what they could bring to the mosh pit in 2005. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. 2005. W. G. Sebald completed this extraordinary, important and controversial book before his untimely death in December 2001. It is a harrowing study of the devastation of German cities by Allied bombardment in World War II, and an examination of the silence in German literature and culture about this unprecedented trauma.bOn the Natural History of Destruction/bis an essential and deeply relevant study of war and society, suffering and amnesia. Like Sebald’s novels, it is studded with meticulous observation, moments of black humour, and throughout, the author’s unmatched intelligence and humanity.“Most writers, even good ones, write of what can be written; and move by their own angles into the discourse of their day. The very greatest write of what cannot be written; gravitating not toward the discourse but toward the silence. They break it, like the crust on untrodden snow. I think of [Anna] Akhmatova and Primo Levi, for example, and of W. G. Sebald, who died in 2001.” -- Richard Eder,iThe New York Times Book Reviewbrbr/i“Sebald is the real thing. . . . Sublime.” --iThe Globe and Mailbrbr/i“bOn the Natural History of Destruction/bis an urgent portrayal of human life under the concussive blows of total war. It should be memorized.” --iNational Post/ibrbr“With this short but perfectly balanced collection, W.G. Sebald puts postwar German literature on the scales and finds it wanting. In doing so, he writes with unflinching clarity and condemns with uncompromising vigour….. Sebald set out to awaken a deeply repressed national memory and to re-emphasize the standards an honest literature must meet; to achieve such things, perhaps he knew his patient required a good hard shake. To judge from the burgeoning debate in Germany, it seems he succeeded.” --iOttawa Citizenbrbr/i“Powerful….. Sebald’s essays could not be more timely.” --iEdmonton Journalb@Aýp£×ÿ¾Úx

Richard Taylor (1826-1879) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War. He was the son of United States President Zachary Taylor and First Lady Margaret Taylor. Although starting his college studies at Harvard University, he graduated from Yale in 1845. He received no scholastic honors, but spent the majority of his time reading books on classical and military history. During the Mexican-American War, Taylor served as the military secretary to his father. After Zachary Taylor's untimely death in July 1850, Taylor inherited Fashion. Steadily he increased its area, improved its sugar works and expanded its labor force to nearly 200 slaves. But the freeze of 1856 ruined his crop, forcing him into heavy debt with a large mortgage on the plantation. After the war, Richard Taylor wrote his memoirs, Destruction and Reconstruction (1879), which is one of the most credited reports of the Civil War. He was active in Democratic Party politics, interceded on behalf of Jefferson Davis with President Andrew Johnson, and was a leading political opponent of Northern Reconstruction policies.

DIVCalifornia is a contentious arena for the study of the Native American past. Some critics say genocide characterized the early conduct of Indian affairs in the state; others say humanitarian concerns. Robert F. Heizer, in the former camp, has compiled a damning collection of contemporaneous accounts that will provoke students of California history to look deeply into the state's record of race relations and to question bland generalizations about the adventuresome days of the Gold Rush./DIVThe Destruction of California Indians is so powerful that every American should read it. These accounts of the activities of agents, military officers, and newspapers reveal how thousands of California natives died from 1847 to 1865 from starvation, disease, drunkenness, enslavement, rape, murder, and warfare. . . . The editor lets the documents tell the story and has provided organization and balance which make it possible to trace themes while letting the reader draw the conclusions.-Library JournalDIVRobert F. Heizer's many works include the classicIThe Other Californians: Prejudice and Discrimination under Spain, Mexico, and the United States to 1920/I(1971), written with Alan Almquist. In his introduction, Albert L. Hurtado sets the documents in historical context and considers Heizer’s influence on scholarship as well as the advances made since his death. A professor of history at Arizona State University, Hurtado is the author ofIIndian Survival on the California Frontier/I./DIV

And in this book, he uses his considerable writing and research skills on their behalf. With authority, sensitivity, and a good sense of humor, he dismantles the negative PR our public education system has endured and does it with hardcore data, not phony science.pBracey delivers the statistics and skillful analysis needed to win the numbers game that plays out daily in the popular press. He questions the so-called failing schools, discusses the phenomenon of summer loss, provides international comparisons, and presents data to argue that investing in universal quality preschool pays off in the long run. He even attempts to enter the mind of the father of American public education, Horace Mann, to see what he might think about the nuttiness of today's policies.pBracey believes that our only hope to save the public school system is for teachers, teacher educators, and administrators to help speed up the needed perspective transformation. And they can begin to do it by reading this book andresuming their rightful position in educating students.

edited by Marie-Laure Bernadac and Hans-Ulrich Obrist "Everyday you have to abandon your past or accept it and then if you cannot accept it, you become a sculptor." Since the age of twelve, the internationally renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois has been writing and drawing--first a diary precisely recounting the everyday events of her family life, then notes and reflections. Destruction of the Father--the title comes from the name of a sculpture she did following the death of her husband in 1973--contains both formal texts and what the artist calls "pen-thoughts": drawing-texts often connected to her drawings and sculptures, with stories or poems inscribed alongside the images. Writing is a means of expression that has gained increasing importance for Bourgeois, particularly during periods of insomnia. The writing is compulsive, but it can also be perfectly controlled, informed by her intellectual background, knowledge of art history, and sense of literary form (she has frequently published articles on artists, exhibitions, and art events). Bourgeois, a private woman "without secrets," has given numerous interviews to journalists, artists, and writers, expressing her views on her oeuvre, revealing its hidden meanings, and relating the connection of certain works to the traumas of her childhood. This book collects both her writings and her spoken remarks on art, confirming the deep links between her work and her biography and offering new insights into her creative process.

Sara's Children : The Destruction of Chmielnik Sara's Children : The Destruction of Chmielnik
$42.95

Full of love, joy and hope, Nathan Garfinkel's wedding portrait captures one of life's turning points. The occasion, however, was more momentous than any one could ever imagine. Only six years before Nathan and his sisters, who surround him in the photograph, were reduced to living skeletons, victims of anti-Semitism that raged out of control during World War II. Nazi Germany and its sympathizers brutally murdered more than six million Jews across Europe, wiping out entire families and, in some cases, villages. Through sheer luck and by helping each other, the Garfinkels overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to evade death. Sara's Children records how the five siblings survived slave labor, starvation, beatings, typhus, exposure and fatigue. The starkly-written narrative relies heavily on the Garfinkels' own words and interviews with other survivors from their hometown of Chmielnik, Poland. The non-fiction work begins with what they lost: loving parents, an extended family, loyal friends and a simple, but vibrant, lifestyle. Nonetheless, disturbing signs of anti-Semitism marred their happy childhoods. Violence and hatred escalate as Germany razes Poland and sweeps Europe. Each chapter explodes with descriptions of the Garfinkels terrible ordeal. Heartbreaking testimonials from other Holocaust survivors, maps, photographs from the late 1940s, and written records culled from Germany reinforce and verify their account. Sara's Children is one family's saga of instinct victory over and triumph amid destruction.

This book was written to look at the areala weapons of mass destruction we have right in the United States that are causing these horrendous facts. The goal is to bring awareness and to help shorten these long lists of death and destruction, which is not only physical death/destruction, but sickness can sometimes kill/destroy our dreams, our relationships, our children, our careers, or our self-esteem. This book discusses strategies to disarm the weapons so they can read more positively and not as grim as stated above.

Keith Lowe has performed the difficult task of describing at once the sustained heroism of R. A. F. Bomber Command and the United States 8th Air Force air crews in the bombing campaign against Nazi Germany, 'the hardest victory' of Allied arms, and the unimaginable horrors of being bombed, centered on the fiery destruction of the great city of Hamburg in 1943. Not since Len Deighton's classic, Bomber, has there been a book which recreated with such objectivity both sides of the story, or which painted in such vivid detail the destruction of a city, and the sufferings of those who lived there and of those British and American young men who put their lives at risk to destroy it.p-- Michael Korda, author of Ulysses S.
