Thank you! Briefly explain how each of the following contributed the escalation of the Cold War? 1. Greece 2 Iran 3 Turkey Thanks! Have a great day!
Greece – Communist backed Civil War led Truman in 1947 to advertise Truman Doctrine to contain Soviet expansion by supporting governments threatened by communist insurgency supported. During the Second World War, Russia and Great Britain occupied Iran (Persia). After the war ended, Russia supported the secession of Iranian Azerbaijan wants to join with the Azerbaijan SSR. Western powers applied pressure on Russia to cease its support. When Mossadegh nationalized the Iranian oil fields, major oil source for the British Navy, American and British intelligence services supported the Iranian military in his overthrow, an act seen as a setback for Russian efforts to have friendly access to warm water ports. Turkey had been neutral in most of World War II, despite a historic enmity with Russia. Turkey was a part of UN forces fighting in Korea, joined NATO in 1952, Russian warships to block access to the Bosphorus and Mediterranean Sea. In 1955 it became a founding member of CENTO, which formed the southern flank against Russia.

Inadvertent Escalation
$21.98 In this sobering book Barry R. Knowledge of these hidden pressures, he believes, may help some future decision maker avoid catastrophe. |

In this systematic study, Zartman and Faure bring together European and American scholars to examine this important topic and to define the point where the concepts and practices of escalation and negotiation meet. Political scientists, sociologists, social psychologists, and war-making and peace-making strategists, among others, examine the various forms escalation can take and relate them to conceptual advances in the analysis of negotiation. They argue that structures, crises, turning points, demands, readiness and ripeness can often define the conditions where the two concepts can meet and the authors take this opportunity to offer lessons for theory and practice. By relating negotiation to conflict escalation, two processes that have traditionally been studied separately, this book fills a significant gap in the existing knowledge and is directly relevant to the many ongoing conflicts and conflict patterns in the world today.Part I. Escalation in Decision-Making
$114.75 Getting projects going is one thing. Stopping them is another. This book examines how and why organizations become ensnared in disastrous decisions. The focal point is Taurus, the now notorious IT venture commissioned by the London Stock Exchange. Taurus was intended to replace London's antiquated share settlement procedures with a state of the art electronic system that would be the envy of the world. The project collapsed after three years' intensive work at a cost to the Stock Exchange and the City of London totalling almost (pound)500 million. The book is an absorbing study of what the author calls 'escalation' in decision-making-'persistence with a decision well beyond the point where a sensible person would give it up'. Such things can happen in any organization on any project, although some may claim that it happens disproportionately often with major IT projects. The Taurus project was nicknamed 'The Mad Hatter's Tea Party'. This book is a salutary tale of rationality, expertise, committees, and human failing. It will be of interest to all concerned with organizational decision-making, IT investment, project management and the workings of the British financial system. The development of a diverse set of perspectives from which to view escalation should lead to greater insights into the phenomenon...Drummond's book may one day be viewed as an important catalyst in the further development of the escalation literature.--ASQbrbrThe development of a diverse set of perspectives from which to view escalation should lead to greater insights into the phenomenon...Drummond's book may one day be viewed as an important catalyst in the further development of the escalation literature.--ASQbrbrThe development of a diverse set of perspectives from which to view escalation should lead to greater insights into the phenomenon...Drummond's book may one day be viewed as an important catalyst in the further development of the escalation literature.--ASQbr The dev@\° |

The Politics of International Crisis Escalation
$66.98 Studies of crisis generally focus on the extraordinary stresses and strains impeding effective decision-making. This book suggests that poor decision-making is less important than the narrowing of political feasible options. The character of a crisis issue can unleash powerful domestic political forces which push leaders towards confrontation. Their military signals of resolve must be explained and justified in terms of the issue at stake in the dispute. How such justification strengthens national resolve depends on how that issue resonates with national culture. The author treats leaders as political role players with more or less confrontational obligations, rather than as disembodied actors able to tackle policy problems as though they were personal ones. The book dissects crisis-decision-making analysis, and explores the political triggers of escalation through a comparative analysis of the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, the Middle East crisis of 1973 , the Cyprus crisis of 1974 and the Falklands/Malvinas crisis of 1982. |

Escalation in Decision-Making
$174.48 Getting organizations going is one thing. Stopping them is another. This book examines how and why organizations become trapped in disastrous decisions. The focal point is Project Taurus, an IT venture commissioned by the London Stock Exchange and supported by numerous City Institutions. Taurus was intended to transform London's antiquated manual share settlement procedures into a state of the art electronic system that would be the envy of the world. The project collapsed after three year's intensive work and investments totalling almost L500 million. This book is an in depth study of escalation in decision making. The author has interviewed a number of people who played a key role and presents a most readable account of what actually happened. At the same time she sets the case in the broader literature of decision making. |

War and Escalation in South Asia
$19 This monograph highlights key factors in South Asia imperiling U.S. interests, and suggests how and where the U.S. military might play an expanded, influential role. It suggests seven steps the military might take to better advance and defend U.S. interests in South Asia, the Middle East, and Asia at large. Washington should intensify involvement in South Asia and become more influential with the governments there. Given the area's potential for violence, it should also shape part of the U.S. military to meet potential crises. |

Fear, Diffusion, and Escalation
$9.05 The wave of ethnic conflict that has recently swept across parts of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Africa has led many political observers to fear that these conflicts are contagious. Contributors argue that ethnic conflict is not caused by intergroup differences so much as by anxieties over security and other factors--and search for ways whereby such transnational ethnic conflicts best can be managed peacefully. The wave of ethnic conflict that has recently swept across parts of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Africa has led many political observers to fear that these conflicts are contagious. Initial outbreaks in such places as Bosnia, Chechnya, and Rwanda, if not contained, appear capable of setting off epidemics of catastrophic proportions. In this volume, David Lake and Donald Rothchild have organized an ambitious, sophisticated exploration of both the origins and spread of ethnic conflict, one that will be useful to policymakers and theorists alike. The editors and contributors argue that ethnic conflict is not caused directly by intergroup differences or centuries- old feuds and that the collapse of the Soviet Union did not simply uncork ethnic passions long suppressed. They look instead at how anxieties over security, competition for resources, breakdown in communication with the government, and the inability to make enduring commitments lead ethnic groups into conflict, and they consider the strategic interactions that underlie ethnic conflict and its effective management. How, why, and when do ethnic conflicts either diffuse by precipitating similar conflicts elsewhere or escalate by bringing in outside parties? How can such transnational ethnic conflicts best be managed? Following an introduction by the editors, which lays a strong theoretical foundation for approaching these questions, Timur Kuran, Stuart Hill, Donald Rothchild, Colin Cameron, Will H. Moore, and David R. Davis examine the diffusion of ideas across national borders@™™™™šÿ¾Úx |

Evolution and Escalation: An Ecological History of Life
$25.7 This book is written for those who, like me, are fascinated with evolution, but I hope it will also be read by historians of human affairs. There are some obvious parallels between the history of life and the cultural history of man--the episodic pace of change the effects of crises, and the role of population growth, for example--and the fossil record teaches some sobering lessons about the futility of the seemingly unstoppable arms race between nations.pHere is one biologist's interpretation of the chronology of life during the last six hundred million years of earth history: an extended essay that draws on the author's own data and a wide-ranging literature survey to discuss the nature and dynamics of evolutionary change in organisms and their biological surroundings. Geerat Vermeij demonstrates that escalation--the process by which species adapt to, or are limited by, their enemies as the latter increase in ability to acquire and retain resources--has been a dominant theme in the history of life despite frequent episodes of extinction. With the impressive scope and rich synthesis of this work, the author has assumed the mantle of a provocative pundit of paleobiology. -- Alan J. Kohn ScienceAn extraordinarily useful book to students of evolutionary paleobiology. -- Carlton Brett Geology |
