Great Battles of Alexander
Saturday, December 12th, 2009Out of Alexander the Great's battles, which would you say is the most interesting?
I personally took the Battle of Gaugamela to be fantastic! I think a Such a small army against Darius the Great, 'many men, and Alexander have come out victorious! Wow!
I agree with Tissafernes in general. I think the most remarkable victory was entirely in Gaugamela! The main reason was better (brilliant actually) led by Alexander and superior men. Greek phalanx was its zenith with the use of "sarisa" (the long spear that Philip father of Alexander had introduced, mainly influenced by Thebes). Very disciplined army better armored (Greeks wee heavily armed) and homogenized. But the secret weapon of Alexander's army was not the phalanx, but instead was a cavalry of "etairoi" (Companions). The Macedonian noblemen cavalry was the best cavalry Greeks could deliver. (The Greeks will rebuild an equally strong cavalry only in Byzantium with the famous "klivanoforoi") The "etairoi" was unstoppable! Strong tax with a heavy thrusting force, and armed with a long spear (more like a spear) than the Persian elite. On the other hand, the Persian army was huge, but not homogenized! (various nations with different weapons and different tactics very difficult communication!). And of course very bad for morale Dareious! It is true that the Greek army took enormous pressure! Their camp was sucked and the second line, Parmenion lead, almost collapsed. But the battle was rated by the conflict of kings! Alexander knew that the Persian army would not stand to fight with a king. Therefore he pay for the king himself, and when Dareious so its front crashed by Alexander fled, he creates his army to hide! But the main result of the Alexander campaign was not destroyed by the Persians, but it was an extension of Greek culture and language!

A Novel of Alexander the Great
$3.97 Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) ascended to the throne of Macedon at the age of twenty. He fought his greatest battles--including the conquest of the mighty Persian Empire--before he was twenty-five and died at the age of thirty-three, still undefeated by any enemy. His reputation as a supreme warrior and leader of men is unsurpassed in the annals of history.brIn the brilliantly imagined first-person voice of Alexander the Great, acclaimed novelist Steven Pressfield brings to life his epic battles, his unerring command of his forces, and the passions and ambitions that drove him. A full-blooded, multidimensional portrait, THE VIRTUES OF WAR captures Alexander's complex character. Alexander was a fearless commander who moved with such daring and speed that no army could withstand him; a driven leader whose ambitions knew no limits; and a man with boundless compassion for his troops, deep friendships with his generals, and profound respect for his enemies. Yet in the end, his noble qualities were subsumed by his insatiable lust for glory.brNo one writes about battles as brilliantly as Pressfield, and in THE VIRTUES OF WAR he vividly describes the seminal conflicts of Alexander's career, revealing the tactics behind them and capturing the blood, heat, and terror of the battlefield. He follows Alexander's forces as they faced and defeated armies that far outnumbered them; delivers a thrilling frontline report from Gaugamela, the scene of Alexander's greatest victory; and, in a memorable vignette, shows the great conqueror finally halted, not by an enemy but by the refusal of his worn-out troops to march any farther.brEpic in scope and magisterial in tone, THE VIRTUES OF WARis sure to take its place among the classics of historical fiction.-Praise for Tides of War:brPressfield serves up not just hair-raising scenes...but many moments of valor and cowardice, lust and bawdy humor....Even more impressively, he delivers a nuanced portrait of ancient Athens.--E@Â?\(õÃÿ¾Úx |

It is therefore easy to see why he would bedubbed Great by posterity. But when this biography portrays Alexander as a combination of king, commander, and statesman a different picture emerges.
