Seven Days Battles
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009Why did Jackson, fail to attack the retreating Union Army during the Seven Days?
For me this is the biggest mystery of American military history. In June of 1862, Jackson had just fantastically Valley Campaign for quick maneuvering and attack agaoinst much larger forces. At Second Manassas a couple motnh Later he started the battle by attacking EU army, which is completed on the roads, but in June 1862, when he had a chance to destroy the Union army and probably win war, he did almost nothing.
I guess I would exhaustion played a role – the Valley campaign was greulling and I would guess emotionally exhausting. So quick movement to get to Mechanicsville, and there may be little left in the tank. Think of sports where a team wins a big victory in overtime against a second, better team. You use all your Resouce, Then a few days later, the team played a game against a lesser opponent and tanks. Its difficlut to identify a precise cause, but they just dont play. It could also be that Jackson was accustomed to working on his own, and to be placed under the command of others and try to work in a group may have had a negative impact on his work.

Seven Days Battles 1862
$18.95 When General Robert E. Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia, the Confederacy was in crisis. Lee changed all that in a brilliant, week-long campaign. On 26 June the Confederates struck, fighting two hard-fought battles in two days at Mechanicsville and Gaine's Mill. The ferocity of the Confederate assaults convinced McClellan that he was outnumbered. Unable to keep the Confederates at bay, the Union army was recalled to Washington. Despite losing a quarter of his men, Lee had saved Richmond, and inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Army of the Potomac. This book traces the course of this short yet crucial campaign. |

Extraordinary Circumstances: The Seven Days Battles
$7.6 pThe Seven Days Battles was the first campaign in the Civil War in which Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia. Listed by J. F.C. Fuller as one of the 51 decisive military campaigns in Western history, the Seven Days were fought in the area southeast of the Confederate capital of Richmond from June 25 to July 1, 1862. Lee and his fellow officers, including 'Stonewall' Jackson, James Longstreet, A. P. Hill, and D. H. Hill, pushed George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac from the gates of Richmond to the James River. Along the way, Lee lost several opportunities to harm McClellan severely, but the Union forces, marching all night and fighting during the day, managed to reach safety.pThe Seven Days has been the subject of a number of fine historical treatments, but none more detailed and engaging than Brian K. Burton's closely observed account. Extraordinary Circumstances is a moment-by-moment story of the campaign that lifted Southern spirits, began Lee's ascent to fame, and almost prompted European recognition of the Confederacy. The Seven Days also began a string of events leading to the Emancipation Proclamation and the shift toward total war. McClellan's defeat meant that his dream of bringing the United States together as it was before the outbreak of the war was gone forever, and the country's very nature changed as a result.pFew of those Federals were ready. James Miller of the 2nd Delaware had seen a Southerner climb a tree. Miller pointed out the man just before the shelling started, and perhaps those within earshot were the only ones who knew something was up. The firing caught Baldy Smith dressing after his bath. Overcoming the shock and opening the door of the outhouse he had used, Smith saw Jackson's guns almost literally filling the air with shot and shell. The general tried to get his groom to bring his best horse, but he soon found that the groom had taken the animal and skedaddled. Neither would be seen for two days. An Englishman wh@fffffgÿ¾Úx |

Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues were at stake as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off on the peninsula between the York and James Rivers. The climactic clash came on June 26-July 1 in what became known as the Seven Days battles, when Lee, newly appointed as commander of the Confederate forces, aggressively attacked the Union army. Casualties for the entire campaign exceeded 50,000, more than 35,000 of whom fell during the Seven Days.pThis book offers nine essays in which well-known Civil War historians explore questions regarding high command, strategy and tactics, the effects of the fighting upon politics and society both North and South, and the ways in which emancipation figured in the campaign.
