DMZ
Should I put my web server on DMZ port, or should I use port forwarding?
Im running IPCOP on my network. What I would like to know why I had to put the webserver on the DMZ port on the firewall (IPCOP). Currently im using port forwarding, but am thinking of putting the web server on the DMZ. Will it provide better security than port forwarding, and what are the pros and cons of using DMZ instead of port forwarding. And can I access the webserver from the internal network when it is connected to the DMZ port.
If you put the server in the DMZ to your network configuration, it will be isolated from the rest of the network, which is a good thing. Sorry, you lose the protection of the network. Now, if the web server is the only service running on the machine you have nothing to worry about, but if you are also running Other services they become available. Close all services other than the web server. If it is a Linux, UNIX, or BSD machine, you should use a redirection script to make enabled the service to receive traffic on port 80 without being bound to port 80 The way you do not have to run it as root, you are welcome to use a privileged port. Access to the Web server that will depend on the routing configurations.
