Chosin

The Chosin Reservoir, did what Marines do to get their arms to release?

Temperatures were well below zero, it would freeze up my arms think they did use their own urine on them, heat urine with parts you did want to urinate on them, hot urine helped to keep nails, etc. again.

Weapons freeze if they become wet, or you use too much oil, which becomes heavy like thick fat and stops it. They would just clean them, and uses little or no oil. When it is well freezing point out, there is usually no running water to get them wet-they just need to keep the oil light.

The epic retreat-under-fire of the First Marine Division from the Chosin Reservoir in the depths of a North Korean winter--from the point of view of the men, the foxholes and tanks, command posts and hospital wards.
Chosin Chosin
$15.98

It was 1950, a brutally cold November in North Korea, and the war seemed all but over. And then a force of nearly 70,000 Chinese "volunteers" crossed the Yalu River, encircling the 30,000 United Nations troops at the Chosin Reservoir. The epic story of what followed--one of the iconic battles in Marine history--is told for the first time in gut-level detail in this book. From the point of view of the men in the foxholes and tanks, outposts and command posts, Chosin offers a harrowing, firsthand account of the 1st Marine Divisions breakout battle against overwhelming Chinese forces in the bitter North Korean winter. Seasoned military historian Eric Hammel describes the errors and miscalculations by American higher-ups that left the division strung out at the end of a narrow road scores of miles from the sea. Then he plunges into the action: the massing of Chinese forces; the punishing climate and terrain; the high-level over-confidence that crippled the American command; and the onset of the overpowering Chinese assault. His account provides a wealth of tactical and human detail and small unit action: from an intelligence officers efforts to make sense of conflicting reports, to engineers improvising a bridge from logs and snow, from Marines marching to POW camps, to a battle-weary messengers discovery of headquarter staff safely ensconced behind friendly lines, settling down in formal dress to a full-course dinner. The result is the most complete book ever written on this heroic battle, a masterful narrative from the perspective of those who fought. Previously published under the same title by Vanguard Press, 1981, ISBN - 081490856X; and by Presidio Press, 1990, ISBN - 089141782.

Well written and meticulously researched ... East of Chosin is military history at its best. -- Harry G. Summers, Jr., Washington Post Book World Roy E. Appleman's East of Chosin, first published in 1987, won acclaim from reviewers, readers, and veterans and their families. For the first time, there was one complete and accessible record of what happened to the army troops trapped east of the Chosin Reservoir during the first wintry blast of the Korean War. Based heavily on the author's interviews and correspondence with the survivors, East of Chosin provided some of those men with their first clue to the fate of fellow soldiers. In November of 1950, U.S. forces had pushed deep into North Korea. Unknown to them, Chinese troops well equipped for below-zero temperatures and blizzard conditions were pushing south. With the 1st Marine Division on the west side of the frozen Chosin reservoir, the army's hastily assembled 31 st Regimental Combat Team, 3,000 strong, advanced up the east side of the reservoir. Task Force Faith in the extreme northern position caught the surprise Chinese attack. With rifles and vehicles often immobilized in the cold and snow, the task force struggled to retreat through a tortuous mountain gauntlet of enemy fire. With truckloads of dead and wounded trapped along on the road, a few of the 385 survivors trudged across the frozen reservoir to alert the marines to their plight.

The epic retreat-under-fire of the First Marine Division from the Chosin Reservoir in the depths of a North Korean winter--from the point of view of the men, the foxholes and tanks, command posts and hospital wards. The epic retreat-under-fire of the 1st Marine Division offers a valuable perspective on war at the gut level.Leaves the reader in awe of the feat of arms.--Infantry Magazine Full of accounts of the stuff that legends are made of.--Sea Power Magazine A factual, revealing, and penetrating look at war at its worst and men at their best.--San Diego Union Told from the point of view of the men in the foxholes and tanks, outposts and command posts, this is the definitive account of the epic retreat under fire of the 1st Marine Division from the Chosin Reservoir. The author first sketches in the errors and miscalculations on the part of the American high command that caused the Marines to be strung out at the end of a narrow road scores of miles from the sea. He then plunges right into the action: the massing of Chinese forces in about ten-to-one strength; the Marines' command problems due to the climate and terrain and high-level over-confidence; and the onset of the overwhelming Chinese assault. There is a wealth of tactical detail and small unit action: from an intelligence officer trying to make sense of conflicting reports, to engineers improvising a wooden bridge made from logs and then paving it with snow, to tired, frightened Marines being marched off to POW camps. In one of the most startling episodes a battle-weary officer reports to a higher headquarters safely located in the rear behind friendly lines and finds formally dressed staff personnel sitting down to full course dinners. Chosin is the most complete book written to date on this iconic battle. Author Eric Hammel's masterful account offers an invaluable perspective on war at the gut level.

During the early days of the Korean War, WWII veteran and company commander Joe Owen saw how regulars and raw reservists hardened into a superb Marine rifle company. As comrades fell around them above Korea's infamous Chosin Reservoir, his Marines triumphed in one of the most horrific infantry battle ever. Joseph R. Owen, 1st Lt., USMC (Ret.), served on active duty in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and from 1948 to 1952.Joe Owen tells it like it was in this evocative, page-turning story of a Marine rifle company in the uncertain, early days of the Korean War. His powerful descriptions of close combat in the snow-covered mountains of the Chosin Reservoir and of the survival spirit of his Marines provide a gritty real-life view of frontline warfare. As a lieutenant who was with them from first muster in California, Owen was in a unique position to see the hastily assembled mix of some 200 regulars and raw reservists harden into a superb Marine rifle company. From steamy rice paddies to frozen mountaintops, the action and narrative move fast as the company learns to fight under enemy fire, eat frozen rations, and keep moving forward when its wounded and dead go down. There are examples of Medal of Honor gallantry; bitter, bloody losses; enemy night assaults; foxhole fights; and patrols through Chinese lines. This book includes the accounts of many Inchon-Seoul and Chosin survivors, woven together and told proudly by one of their own on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the war. In addition, the author provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the frantic race to prepare American fighting forces for combat in Korea and offers lessons in leadership for today's Marines and soldiers.During the early, uncertain days of the Korean War, World War II veteran and platoon leader Lieutenant Joe Owen saw firsthand how the hastily assembled mix of some two hundred regulars and raw reservists hardened into a superb Marine rifle company known as Baker-One-Seven.pAs comrade?ÿ×=p£×ÿ¾Úx
