In an attempt to outflank the German Gustav Line running across Italy, Operation SHINGLE was launched on January 22nd 1944. Achieving complete surprise, the Allies made a successful landing at Anzio, but paused rather than pushing quickly inland, a delay which gave the Germans time to seal off the area and to counterattack the beachhead. Heavy fighting took place until early March, during which the Americans and British were nearly driven into the sea, after which a stalemate was reached. In the following months the Allied forces were reinforced and in late May a breakout was made with the strategic intention of cutting off the Germans retreating from the Gustav line, which had now been pierced. However, General Mark Clark redirected the main effort of the Anzio forces towards the capture of Rome, permitting most of the enemy to escape and to fight another day. An operation that cost thousands of lives for disputed benefits, SHINGLE remains a controversial subject.

Screen greats Robert Mitchum, Peter Falk and Arthur Kennedy star in the riveting war drama Anzio, a vivid portrait of one of the bloodiest WWII battles ever fought. After landing with Allied troops at Anzio in 1944, war correspondent Dick Ennis (Mitchum) and buddy Corporal Rabinoff (Falk) tell Anzio commander General Lesley (Mitchum) that the road to Rome is wide open. But instead of heading to Rome, Lesley attempts to build a coastal stronghold, only to discover that the Germans have outflanked them by enclosing the Anzio beachhead. Four months and over 30,000 casualties later, the Allied forces smash through the German lines and victoriously march to Rome. Directed by highly-acclaimed action director Edward Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny, Back To Bataan), Anzio is a powerful film and a symbol of heroic tenacity.

Winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, Don Whitehead delivered battlefield dispatches that were classics of frontline reporting. One of the legendary reporters of World War II, Whitehead covered almost every important Allied invasion and campaign in Europe-from landings in Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio on the Italian front to Normandy, where he went ashore with the First Army Division. Writing for the Associated Press, he covered the brutal beachhead fighting and followed the Allied sweep to victory across France, Belgium, and Germany. Daring, valiant, and fearless, "Beachhead Don" was one of sixteen correspondents awarded the Medal of Freedom by Harry S Truman.Collected here for the first time, his dispatches are classics of war journalism. This book, long overdue, will help a new generation discover Whitehead's vivid, powerful, and unforgettable stories of men at war. John Romeiser provides a richly detailed introduction and background to the man, his work, and his world.

In January 1944, the Allies decided to land at Anzio in order to overcome the stalemate at Cassino. This amphibious landing has become one of the most controversial campaigns of World War II. Questionable decisions by the Allied leadership led to three months of World War I-style trench warfare, and the entire beachhead suffered from continuous German observation and bombardment.  Vividly describing each thrust and counter-thrust, this book takes us through the agonizing struggle as each side sought to retain or regain mastery.  It shows how Anzio proved to be a stepping stone not only to Rome but also to the liberation of Italy.

The ninth volume in Admiral Morison’s history takes up the story of American naval activities in the Mediterranean where Volume II left off, and covers three major amphibious operations-the invasion of Sicily, the capture of the Salerno beachhead, and the long Anzio beachhead struggle. In all three the United States Navy distinguished itself, both for impeccable performance in landing the Army where it wanted to go, and in supporting with naval gunfire the troops fighting ashore.

The Battle of Anzio

The Battle of Anzio

$12.99

The Battle of Anzio was among of the most bloody of the World War II conflicts. T.R. Fehrenbach’s accurate account stunningly depicts the reality of the Allied forces’ fight for survival on an Italian beach as they stormed what Winston Churchill called the soft underbelly of the Axis powers. In one of the turning points of the war, the allies clung to a narrow strip of sand while German planes swooped in from above and artillery shells and mortar fire pounded them on the ground. This is a true and dramatic account of the battle from the perspective of a soldier and military historian, told with pride, compassion and spirit. T.R. Fehrenbach’s account of war needs no embellishing and brings you into the thick of the action.

This film from director Edward Dmytryk (THE CAINE MUTINY) follows the Allied landing at the beaches of Anzio–one of the bloodiest battles of the war thanks to an overly cautious general (Arthur Kennedy) allowing the unprepared Germans time to erect the Caesar Line of defense around Rome. Robert Mitchum stars as Dick Ennis, an unarmed seen-it-all war correspondent who finds himself in the thick of the fray. Peter Falk is scrappy corporal Rabinoff, a former shoe salesman who's grown addicted to the thrill of combat. Together they get stuck behind enemy lines and must fight their way back to warn the troops.Based on the novel by Wynford Vaughan Thomas, this Dino De Laurentiis-produced epic strives to be a thoughtful exploration of the roots of why man goes to war, as well as a full-scale action picture. While not a classic in the line of THE LONGEST DAY, it's interesting enough, with Falk and Mitchum carrying the ball in great, leisurely strides every step of the way.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenFull ScreenAudio: Dolby Digital Mono- English Dolby Digital Mono- French Dolby Digital Mono- Spanish Dolby Digital Mono- PortugueseAdditional Release Material: Trailers – 1. A riveting tale."–Baltimore Sun "Offers some perceptions never presented on the Normandy invasion."–Military Review "If you want to know what it was like, from Private to General, from rifle to tank, from beginning to end, this is the book for you." –CharlesM. Shulz Originally published in 1989, Beyond the Beachhead became the standard for nearly all future histories of the WWII citizen-soldier. It illustrated the brutal realities of life on the front line through following the movements of one division circumflex–the 29th–during 45 days of combat from Omaha Beach to the liberation of St. Lo. Available for the first time in trade paperback, this now-classic study of one division’s experience set against the backdrop of the U.S. Army’s tactical strategy is a must read for anyone interested in the real World War II. Joseph Balkoski is a historian specializing in the history of D-Day and the Normandy Campaign during WWII. Beyond the Beachhead was his first book. He currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, with his wife and daughter. "The boys in Company A, 116th Infantry, were not in good spirits. They had lost two of their six landing craft on the run-in. As the four remaining boats slid onto the beach and ground to a halt, their bow ramps dropped with a splash. The company was right where it was supposed to be, just east of the Vierville draw on the beach known as Dog Green. But the Germans were waiting for them."–from Beyond the Beachhead

Italy was the scene of the longest, bloodiest, most frustrating, and least understood series of battles fought by the Western Allies during World War II. Now, John S. D. Eisenhower offers a new look at the Italian campaign, emphasizing the Anzio offensive an operation pushed by Winston Churchill that fell largely to American troops to carry out. It has been said that Anzio was a soldier s battle, remembered more for blood shed than for military objectives achieved. By focusing on the experiences of the soldiers who fought there and the decisions of commanders in perilous circumstances, They Fought at Anzio offers a new appreciation of the contributions of both and a new understanding of this unheralded theater of the war.

The seawolves were a formidable technology, and with them, the Nazis came close to cutting of Great Britain’s access to food and supplies and starving them into submission. The sea battles were a crucial element of the war, and this documentary shows how the Allies eventually managed to stave off the technologically superior Germans and put an end to the fighting.

Fatal Decision

Fatal Decision

$11.99

Fatal Decision is a powerful, dramatic, moving, and ultimately definitive narrative of one of the most desperate campaigns of World War II. In the winter of 1943-44, Anzio, a small Mediterranean resort and port some thirty-five miles south of Rome, played a crucial role in the fortunes of World War II as the target of an amphibious Allied landing. The Allies planned to bypass the strong German defenses along the Gustav Line and at Monte Cassino sixty miles to the southeast, which were holding up the American and British armies and preventing the liberation of Rome. By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure the beachhead and then push inland to cut off the two main highways and railroads supplying the German forces to the south, either trapping and annihilating the German armies or forcing them to withdraw to the north, thus opening the way to Rome. But the reality of one of the most desperate campaigns of World War II was bad management, external meddling, poorly relayed orders, and uncertain leadership. The Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for their lives for four dreadful months. The eventual victory in May 1944 was muted, bitter, and overshadowed by the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6. Mixing flawless research, drama, and combat with a brilliant narrative voice, Fatal Decision is one of the best histories ever written of a World War II military campaign.

This compelling work is Lloyd M. Wells’s firsthand account of World War II based on a journal he kept during the war, letters he sent home, and personal records, as well as recollections of people and events. Wells offers the reader information that has never before been provided. He tells exactly what happened to 2/7 Queens on the night of February 21, 1944, when the troops came up to "the caves" at Anzio. He also depicts what happened during the last offensive in Italy and what armored infantry troops experienced on the perimeter of the attack. This book, however, is not just a story of battle actions. It is a personal story about the "old Army" and how young soldiers were transformed by it during one of the greatest upheavals in world history. "Beyond question this is one of the best written, most hauntingly eloquent books I’ve read in years. It is beautifully done."-Robert H. Ferrell

Challenging conventional views, stretching the minds of Civil War enthusiasts and scholars as only John Michael Priest can, Into the Fight is both a scholarly and a revisionist interpretation of the most famous charge in American history. Using a wide array of sources, ranging from the monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield to the accounts of the participants themselves, Priest here rewrites the conventional thinking about this unusually emotional, yet serious, moment in our Civil War. Starting with a fresh point of view, and with no axes to grind, Into the Fight challenges all interested in that stunning moment in history to rethink their assumptions. Worthwhile for its use of soldiers’ accounts, valuable for its forcing the reader to rethink the common assumptions about the charge, critics may disagree with this research, but they cannot ignore it.
